How to Download a Claude Artifact (Every Type, 2026)
To download a Claude artifact, open it and use the controls at the top of the artifact panel. Legacy artifacts have buttons to view the code, copy it or download it. Artifacts made from a Docs, Slides or Design template have an Export button that saves Word, PDF, PowerPoint, Markdown or HTML. Claude Code artifacts are already a file on your computer, so you only need the path. For any other artifact, the reliable way is to copy the content or ask Claude to give it to you as a file.
| Artifact | How to download it | Formats |
|---|---|---|
| Legacy chat artifact (made before 16 Sep 2026) | Download control at the top of the artifact panel | The artifact's own format: .md, .html, .jsx, .py… |
| Claude Docs | Export | Word, PDF, Markdown, Google Docs |
| Claude Slides | Export | PowerPoint, PDF, Google Slides |
| Claude Design | Export | .zip, PDF, PowerPoint, standalone HTML |
| Motion animation | Export | MP4 |
| Claude Code artifact | It's already a local file. Ask Claude for the path | .html or .md |
| A file Claude created (spreadsheet, document) | Download it from the chat | .xlsx, .docx, .pptx, .csv… |
| Any other artifact | Copy, or ask Claude for the file | Whatever you ask for |

Download a legacy chat artifact
Legacy artifacts are the ones made in a chat before 16 September 2026. You can still open, publish and share them, but you can't make new ones. Anthropic: "Use the controls at the top of the artifact panel to view the code, copy the content, or download it."
- Open the chat that made the artifact, or find it under Artifacts in the sidebar.
- Click the artifact so it opens in the panel.
- Use the download control at the top of the panel. The file comes out in the artifact's own format: a document as Markdown, a web page as HTML, a React component as its source code.
A downloaded React artifact is source code, not a page you can double-click and run. If you want something that opens in a browser, ask Claude first: "Give me this as one self-contained HTML file that loads React from a CDN." Then download that.
Export a Docs, Slides or Design artifact
Artifacts made from a template have an Export button instead:
- Docs export to Word, PDF, Markdown and Google Docs.
- Slides export to PowerPoint and PDF, or straight to Google Slides as an editable file.
- Design exports as a .zip, PDF, PowerPoint or standalone HTML, and each artboard can be saved as PNG or PDF.
- Motion animations export as MP4 video.
This is the easiest route to a PDF or an Office file. If you want a Word document from a plain artifact, asking Claude to rebuild it as a Docs artifact and exporting that usually beats converting it yourself.
Get the file behind a Claude Code artifact
Claude Code writes every artifact to an HTML or Markdown file before publishing it to claude.ai/code/artifact/.... Unless you named a location, that file is in a temporary directory outside your project. To keep it:
Where is the file for the artifact you just published? Copy it to ./reports/.
Or ask before Claude builds the page: "Write the artifact to reports/funnel.html." Temporary files don't last forever, so copy anything you want to keep into your project.
A Claude Code page can also offer viewers a file the page generates, such as a CSV of a table or a PNG of a chart. Ask Claude to "add a button that downloads this table as a CSV". The artifact viewer blocks ordinary download links, so Claude has to build the button with its downloads capability.
Download any other artifact
Anthropic's help center doesn't document a download button for newer artifacts that weren't made from a template. Two methods always work:
- Copy it. Use the copy control in the artifact panel and paste into a file with the right extension (
.md,.html,.py,.csv). - Ask Claude for a file. "Give me this artifact as a downloadable HTML file" (or
.md,.docx,.csv). With Cloud code execution and file creation turned on in Settings > Capabilities, Claude can create real files in the chat that you download directly. On Team and Enterprise, that setting is under Organization settings > Capabilities.
Save a Claude artifact as a PDF
- Template artifacts: use Export > PDF.
- HTML artifacts: download or copy the HTML, open it in your browser, and print to PDF (Cmd+P or Ctrl+P, then "Save as PDF").
- Markdown artifacts: ask Claude to turn it into a Docs artifact and export to PDF, or open the Markdown in any editor that prints to PDF.
A PDF is a snapshot. When the artifact changes, you print it again and send the new file, and the old one stays in people's inboxes. If the content will change, a link that updates in place saves you from that (see below).
Where Claude saves your artifacts
You don't need to download an artifact to keep it. "Everything you make is saved to the Artifacts tab in your Claude sidebar." Claude Code artifacts are listed at claude.ai/code/artifacts, and /artifacts in Claude Code lists them in the terminal. Artifacts that store data can hold up to 20 MB of text each.
Downloading matters when you want a copy outside Claude: to email, archive, put in a repository, or keep after an Enterprise retention policy deletes old artifacts.
Download an artifact someone shared with you
It depends on what they shared and the access they gave you:
- A published legacy artifact: click Copy to copy its code. If you're signed in on Free, Pro, Max or Ultra, you can also copy it into your own account.
- A newer artifact shared with you: people given Commenter or Can edit access can download files the artifact offers. Can view access is read-only.
- A Claude Code artifact: use any download button the page has. Otherwise, ask the person who made it for the file.
Instead of downloading: share it as a link
Many people download an artifact only to email it or upload it somewhere else. If what you want is for someone else to see it, publishing the file is often less work than sending attachments:
anchorify report.html
# → https://anchorify.io/your-org/your-project/report
The reader opens the link without a Claude account. When you change the file, re-run the command and the same link shows the new version, with no second PDF to send. It works for Markdown, HTML, code, CSV and PDF, and you can add --password when needed. See how to share a Claude artifact at a URL you control or the step-by-step for each artifact type.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is there no download button on my Claude artifact?
Download controls are documented for legacy artifacts (made before 16 September 2026), and template artifacts use Export instead. For other newer artifacts, copy the content from the panel or ask Claude to give it to you as a file. If Claude can't create files, check that Cloud code execution and file creation is on under Settings > Capabilities.
How do I download a Claude artifact as HTML?
For a legacy HTML artifact, use the download control in the artifact panel. For a Design artifact, Export > standalone HTML. For a Claude Code artifact, ask Claude for the local file path. For anything else, ask Claude: "Give me this as one self-contained HTML file," then download or copy it.
Can I download a Claude artifact as a Word document or PowerPoint?
Yes, from template artifacts. Docs export to Word and Slides export to PowerPoint. For a plain artifact, ask Claude to rebuild it as a Docs or Slides artifact and export it, or to create a .docx or .pptx file in the chat.
Do downloaded Claude artifacts still work offline?
Static content does: Markdown, plain HTML, code and CSV. Interactive artifacts that load React or chart libraries from a CDN need an internet connection. Artifacts that call Claude, or pull data from connected apps, stop working outside Claude because those calls depend on a Claude session.
How do I save a Claude artifact without downloading it?
You don't have to do anything. Claude saves every artifact to the Artifacts tab in your sidebar, and Claude Code artifacts are listed at claude.ai/code/artifacts. Download a copy only if you need the file outside Claude.
