How Quora Works

A practical guide to posting, answering, commenting, moderation, and visibility

Prepared 28 September 2026 · Version 1.0

1. Executive summary#

This document explains how Quora actually functions as a publishing platform: what you can create, how each content type is moderated, and what determines whether anyone sees it. It is written for people who intend to publish on Quora and need to understand the rules before they run into them.

Ten findings shape everything that follows.

  1. Quora separates two systems that users constantly confuse: moderation and ranking. Moderation is a policy judgment. It notifies you, and you can appeal it. Ranking is a quality score. It is silent, it has no notification, and it has no appeal. Most "why did my reach drop" complaints are the second system, not the first.

  2. Content can be hidden from readers with no reason shown at all. Quora's production code contains eight collapse categories that suppress an answer's reach while displaying nothing to readers. Only the author and moderators see the notice. This is the real mechanism behind most "shadowban" reports.

  3. There is no shadowban flag. The term appears nowhere in Quora's code or documentation. The experience is fully explained by two verified mechanisms: silent question-level distribution restriction, and the eight silent collapse types above.

  4. Quora has no misinformation policy, and no policy on AI-generated content. We read every one of Quora's 197 help-centre articles and all four core policy documents. Neither rule exists. That absence is deliberate and conspicuous.

  5. Quora nevertheless suppresses AI-looking content automatically and silently. Its live code contains collapse types named likely_llm_generated and user_llm_content, at both answer and question level. These render to readers as a generic "needs improvement" heading. You cannot appeal a rule that was never published.

  6. "Be Nice, Be Respectful" (BNBR) no longer exists as a policy. It survives only as vocabulary in Quora's warning emails. Its substance has been absorbed into two sections of Platform Policies: Harassment and Bullying, and Hate Speech.

  7. Google visibility is structurally different for answers and posts. Answer permalinks are deliberately excluded from Google's index; their value folds into the question page. Space posts live on their own indexable subdomain. If search visibility is the goal, the vehicle matters more than the content.

  8. Quora blocks every major AI crawler except Google's. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity cannot retrieve Quora content. Publishing on Quora is a Google AI Overviews play only, and Quora controls that switch unilaterally.

  9. There is no money in it. The Quora Partner Program was retired in 2022–2023. Spaces subscriptions and ads revenue sharing were discontinued on 17 November 2024. What remains is invite-only.

  10. Quora's traffic has roughly halved year over year while Reddit grew. Domain authority remains very high (DR 92). The authority has outlived the audience, and that gap is the central strategic fact about the platform today.

2. Why this matters, and what has changed#

2.1 Traffic#

Quora's organic search traffic has fallen sharply and consistently since 2024. Two independent measurements agree on the scale:

Source Measurement
Similarweb, data to 2 Jan 2026 Quora global traffic −53% year over year
Graphite / Similarweb, Feb–Dec 2024 vs Jan–Nov 2025 Quora organic traffic −45%, the steepest decline among the 40,000 largest US sites

The comparison matters. Over the same period Reddit grew roughly 12%, and total Google organic traffic to large US sites fell only about 2.5%. Quora is an extreme outlier, not a participant in a general trend. The likely cause is Google's AI Overviews absorbing question-shaped queries that previously sent traffic to Quora.

Quora also lost ground in Google's "Discussions and forums" module. Facebook overtook it as the second-most-cited domain in January 2026 and has held that position since.

2.2 Authority#

Domain Rating remains 92 (Ahrefs, September 2026). Quora pages still rank. The paradox of the platform in 2026 is a very high-authority domain attached to a rapidly shrinking audience.

2.3 The AI-crawler position#

Quora's robots.txt blocks, from the site root:

GPTBot · OAI-SearchBot · ChatGPT-User · ClaudeBot · Claude-User · Claude-SearchBot · PerplexityBot · Applebot-Extended · Bytespider · Diffbot · ImagesiftBot · PetalBot · Scrapy · Bravebot · ia_archiver

Googlebot and Google-Extended are allowed. The file opens with an explicit notice that all crawlers are prohibited from using Quora content to train AI models "except where explicit prior permission has been granted by Quora through a contractual licensing agreement."

Three consequences:

2.4 Monetization#

Program Status
Quora Partner Program (paid users for asking questions) Retired. English: 30 Sep 2022. All languages: 24 Mar 2023. Final payout 3 Apr 2023.
Spaces subscriptions Discontinued 17 Nov 2024
Ads revenue sharing Discontinued 17 Nov 2024
Quora+ revenue sharing Live, invite-only. $6.99/month or $47.88/year subscription; creators earn from subscriber reading time and interaction.

Quora's own announcement gave the reason for the 2024 shutdowns plainly: the programs "tended to reward quantity over quality, which inadvertently crowded out some of the best content," and combatting abuse "required significant team resources."

Any guide still telling you to ask questions for ad revenue is at least three years out of date.

3. The content model#

Quora has five content types. They are governed by different rules and reach readers through different pipes.

Type What it is Where it lives Google-indexable?
Question The unit of the site. Community property, not owned by its asker. Its own page Yes — question pages are the indexable unit
Answer A response to a question Question page, your profile No — permalinks are noindex and canonicalise to the question
Post Free-form content, the successor to Quora Blogs A Space, your profile Yes via the Space subdomain
Comment Response to an answer, post or other comment Attached to its parent No
Space A topic community you can own or contribute to {slug}.quora.com Yes — own subdomain, more permissive robots

The practical implication of the last column is significant and counter-intuitive: by default, an answer you write cannot rank in Google in its own right. Its value is folded into the question page. A Space post can.

3.1 Questions#

Questions are explicitly "community property," and the practical consequences of that principle are stricter than most new users expect:

3.2 Answers#

Answers are the workhorse of the platform and the content type with the most detailed policy treatment. Key mechanics:

3.3 Posts#

Posts are the blog-like format. Their defining characteristics:

3.4 Comments#

Quora's help centre contains no article about comments at all. We searched the full corpus of 197 articles; the word appears only incidentally, in block effects and Space settings. This is the least documented surface on the platform, so everything below is either code-verified or community-observed.

3.5 Spaces#

A Space is a sub-community with its own roles, its own rules and its own moderation layer.

Roles, and what each can do:

Role Powers
Owner All settings; transfer ownership; delete the Space; invite admins, moderators, contributors and followers
Admin Space settings including disabling comments; invite moderators, contributors and followers
Moderator Approve or reject submissions; hide content; invite contributors and followers
Contributor Post content directly to the Space
Follower View and interact; submit content if submissions are enabled

If an owner leaves Quora, ownership transfers automatically to the longest-tenured admin.

Before you name one. Anyone can create a Space, but the constraints are tight: the description is capped at 80 characters, the custom URL at 50 characters (Latin letters and digits only), and the Space name at 50 characters and globally unique. Name changes are permitted once every three months.

Content and moderation mechanics:

3.6 Blocking#

Quora's blocking article (updated August 2025) is unusually specific. Blocking someone prevents them from:

following you · turning on notifications for your updates · appearing in your feed or Digest · @-mentioning you · commenting on your answers · sending you an Answer Request · upvoting or downvoting your comments

Blocking also unfollows you both ways, removes their topic endorsements of you, and hides any inbox thread between you.

One important limit: blocking does not stop someone seeing your questions or answers. They can still read your public content.

Mute is the lighter tool, and it differs in kind. In Quora's own terms, mute is one-way and feed-scoped: you stop seeing that person's content and they are never told. Block is mutual and interaction-scoped. Mute also suppresses Answer Requests from that person, and requests for topics you have muted are not delivered. Topics and Spaces can be muted the same way.

Two controls that do not exist on Quora, despite being widely assumed: there is no Snooze (zero occurrences across all 197 help articles) and no Restrict feature analogous to Instagram's. "Restrict" appears in Quora's documentation only in content senses — restricted distribution, restricted Spaces.

3.7 Anonymity — historical, and self-contradictory#

Quora ended anonymity for new content:

Quora's stated rationale, from its July 2021 announcement "Moving to pseudonymous from anonymous": relaxing the real-names policy made anonymous asking unnecessary, "as someone can create an account under another name to ask a question they don't want associated with their account."

Legacy anonymous content still exists and is managed through "Anonymous Edit Links," which are not tied to any account and which Quora does not retain — if you hold one, it is the only way to edit or delete that content. Quora states that its systems "do not retain identity information for creators of anonymous questions and answers."

Quora's own documentation contradicts itself here, and we could not resolve which side is current. The same articles that carry the 2021 discontinuation notices go on to describe anonymous answering in the present tense. The block article, whose byline shows an August 2025 edit, still contains a live carve-out explaining that a blocked person "will be able to upvote your answer" if you wrote it anonymously. Treat both statements as Quora's own, contradictory, current text.

The wider documentation defect, which matters for anyone re-checking this work: the date on a Quora help article is not evidence that its content is current. Nearly every article carries a 2026 metadata date; the real content dates are frequently 2021 or 2022, and several articles describe features that no longer exist. Read the byline, and cross-check the body against the live product.

3.8 Regional access restrictions#

Under the UK Online Safety Act, all Quora users in the UK must complete age assurance before enabling adult content, and any previously enabled adult content setting was automatically disabled. Quora's partners are k-ID (face scans, processed on-device) and Veratad (ID documents, not stored). This is a distribution gate rather than a publishing restriction, and it is the most significant compliance change to the platform since 2024.

4. The rulebook#

Quora has no single content policy document. Rules are split across four core documents plus topic-specific articles.

Document Last substantive update What it governs
Platform Policies 19 Nov 2025 The master rule list
Question and Answer Policies 4 Jun 2025 Answers, questions, promotion, affiliations
Spaces Policies 23 Jun 2025 Space-specific rules
Plagiarism and attribution 23 Jun 2025 Attribution, blockquotes, duplicate posting
Terms of Service 2024 Platform-wide legal terms
Acceptable Use Policy 27 Sep 2022 Malware, unlawful activity

Note: quora.com/content-policy no longer exists as a policy page. It now redirects to a topic page containing no policy text. Quora's actual rules live only in the help centre.

4.1 The prohibited categories#

Platform Policies, verbatim preamble: "Quora is a place that empowers people to share and grow the world's knowledge. In order to provide everyone with a safe and authentic experience using Quora, the following types of content and behaviors are prohibited:"

1. Spam. Selling illegal products, services or technology; weapons or controlled substances; illegal streaming links; get-rich-quick schemes; "miraculous improvements such as rapid weight loss programs"; advance-fee scams; unofficial password or account recovery; hacking services; coordinated inauthentic activity, such as vote manipulation; products that artificially manipulate engagement metrics; deceptive or malicious links, including ones mimicking Quora's own interface; posting the same content repeatedly; and, for the purpose of driving traffic or monetary gain: irrelevant answers or comments, editing your questions to insert links, questions promoting a business or soliciting, and "excessively promoting the same product or service."

2. Harassment and Bullying. Content posted "with the intent to harass, intimidate, or humiliate an individual, whether in public or private," including encouraging others to do so. Includes repeated contact after being blocked, creating a Space to harass someone, targeted insults based on personal attributes, and doxxing — with a defined list of protected personal information that notably includes "real name of a pseudonymous account."

3. Hate Speech. "A serious attack on a group or individual based on their race, ethnicity, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, sex, religion, caste, serious medical condition, or disability." Includes slurs used disparagingly and content that dehumanises or calls for exclusion. Quora additionally prohibits denial of the Holocaust and the Armenian Genocide.

4. Harmful Activities and Self-Harm. Threats of violence; encouraging or glorifying civilian violence; terrorist organisation activity; suicide and self-harm, explicitly including eating disorders, and soliciting or sharing methods; animal cruelty; and graphically violent profile photos or Space imagery.

5. Sexual Exploitation and Abuse. Child sexual abuse material results in removal, referral to authorities, and permanent ban. Covers real and fantasy depictions. Includes a carve-out protecting advocacy against abuse.

6. Impersonation and Deceptive Activity. Impersonation, unauthorised entity accounts, and multiple accounts used to violate policy, fake engagement, engage in targeted reporting, or evade enforcement.

7. Intellectual Property and Personal Rights. Copyright, trademark, privacy.

8. Profile Names. Restrictions on profanity, explicit language, phone numbers, email addresses.

9. Special Cases and Quora Brand. Company accounts, titles, and unauthorised use of the Quora name or logo.

10. Adult Content. Only permitted in answers to questions that themselves reference an adult topic (which restricts their distribution), and in Spaces tagged "Adult." Not permitted in profile pictures, Space icons or cover photos.

4.2 What is conspicuously absent#

We read all four core documents in full and searched every one of the 197 help-centre articles. The following do not exist:

Category Status
Misinformation / disinformation No such rule anywhere. Zero occurrences of "misinformation," "disinformation," or "fake news" in any policy document.
AI-generated content No policy. No disclosure requirement, no labelling rule, no stated penalty for user-posted AI content.
Coordinated inauthentic behaviour Not standalone. It exists only as one bullet under Spam.
BNBR (Be Nice, Be Respectful) Discontinued as a policy. Its content now lives in Harassment and Bullying, and Hate Speech. The phrase survives only in enforcement emails.
Political content suppression No such category exists. We found no evidence for this common belief.
Keyword blocklist No evidence. Link suppression operates at the domain level, not by keyword.

The rules that constrain commercial publishing, verbatim:

4.4 Plagiarism#

"Answers and posts that plagiarize content from other sources will be deleted." Attribution must be explicit, with a link for online sources, and copied passages must be visually marked — Quora's "strong preference" is blockquote formatting. Self-republication from your own site has a lighter rule: no blockquotes required, but cite the original at the end.

Plagiarism is classed as "a serious policy violation," and Quora states it "may ban people who repeatedly violate this policy."

5. How moderation works#

5.1 The pipeline#

Quora states its own architecture directly in its Terms of Service:

"We use machine learning, automated tools, and human review to evaluate and determine whether content goes against our Policies."

That is the clearest official confirmation of a hybrid automated-and-human pipeline. Three things trigger it:

  1. User reports. The "Report" option in the "…" menu, which Quora calls "the fastest and most efficient way to get your concern addressed." Reportable: questions, answers, posts, and comments.
  2. Automated classification. Quora's production code confirms ML classifiers running on content, including on Space comments. Fully automated collapse categories exist, including one literally named needs_improvement_automated.
  3. Specialist channels. DMCA notices go to a dedicated copyright process. Underage-user concerns route through a safety option.

Quora publishes no timeline or service level for reports or appeals anywhere.

5.2 The enforcement ladder#

Quora's own wording, from its enforcement clause: "Quora has the sole authority and final decision as to whether content or behavior violates these policies. We may enforce these policies in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to written warnings, removal of content, adding warning tags to content, or the limitation or termination of a user's access to Quora."

Action What it means
Warning / content warning First-step escalation on the path to a ban
Warning tags Content stays but is labelled
Hide / collapse Content stays on the page, folded. The default outcome for non-severe violations
Delete Reserved for severe violations
Limit distribution Applied to questions and to Spaces; content reaches fewer people
Question merge Duplicate questions combined
"Needs Improvement" Question hidden until edited
Credential hide Credential removed from display until the user improves it
Edit-block Account can log in but cannot post or edit. Explicitly the step before a ban
Ban / termination Permanent loss of account

Quora's stated ladder: "If a person violates a Quora policy multiple times, they will usually receive content warnings and/or a temporary edit-block before being banned."

Terms that are not Quora's: "purge" (user-coined), "shadowban" (no such flag exists), and "suspension" as a distinct tier (the help centre consistently says "ban").

5.3 Appeals#

You can appeal. Quora uses the word "appeal" and provides four distinct routes.

Decision How to appeal
Collapsed or deleted content "Appeal" button on the notification, or the "Appeal" link at the bottom of the collapsed answer
Other moderation decisions Help centre → Contact Us → "I want to appeal a moderation decision"
Account ban Dedicated ban appeal contact form
Flagged profile name Contact form → "I want to appeal a moderation decision" → "Flagged Name"
Deleted question or answer Dedicated contact form
Hidden credential Dedicated contact form
Copyright takedown against you DMCA counter-notification; if the complainant does not respond within 10 business days, Quora "may replace the content that was removed"

The collapse appeal modal offers two grounds: "My answer does not violate the policy" and "I have edited my answer to conform to the policy." It also contains a "Lock answer to prevent uncollapsing" checkbox.

What Quora does not publish: any appeal timeline, any number of appeal tiers, and any guarantee that a human reviews an appeal. The Terms of Service say human review is part of moderation generally; no policy promises it for appeals specifically.

Widely circulated claims about appeal timeliness and about appeal email addresses (such as [email protected]) come from vendor blogs, some of which sell ban-evasion tooling that Quora's own policies prohibit. Treat them as unreliable.

6. Visibility: what actually determines reach#

6.1 The two systems#

This is the single most important distinction in this document.

Moderation Ranking / distribution
What it is A policy determination A quality score
Who decides Quora Moderation Learned models
Notifies you? Yes No
Appeal available? Yes No
Effect Collapse, delete, warn, edit-block, ban Fewer people see it

Content can be quietly demoted by ranking with no notification, no policy citation, and no recourse. Quora says so itself, in the only official statement on the subject, under the heading "Quality and distribution — how Quora distributes high-quality answers":

"High-quality answers should get a lot of distribution (in feed, in digest emails, etc.). Low-quality answers should get minimal distribution. The more complete and thoughtful your answer is, the more likely it will (1) rank at or near the top of the page and (2) reach lots of readers. Short fragments that contribute a bit, but not much, to the quality of the page won't get much distribution."

That is an official admission that answers are demoted purely on quality scoring, independent of any report, collapse, or moderation action.

6.2 How answers are ranked#

Quora does not document this. There is no help-centre article on answer ranking. Quora's own Promoted Answers article delegates the question to a community Q&A page rather than a policy document.

What can be established:

6.3 Collapse: the core visibility mechanism#

Collapse is Quora's primary soft-hiding tool. Readers see a line reading "N answers collapsed" with a "Why?" control, which expands a grouped list or routes to a dedicated page.

Collapsed answers are grouped under headings drawn from Quora's internal reason codes:

Heading readers see Internal reasons grouped under it
"Answers that need improvement" Low answer score (downvote-driven), manual admin collapse, spam score, moderation collapse
"Answers that have been removed from this Space" Space removal
"Answers that are duplicates" Duplicate author
"Answers that have an unverified author" Flagged name

Note that downvote-driven collapse sits under the same public heading as moderation collapse. A reader generally cannot tell why an answer was collapsed.

6.4 The silent suppression set#

This is the most operationally important finding in this document, and it is not documented anywhere by Quora.

Quora's front-end code decides whether to display a public moderation notice, and renders one only when the collapse category is not one of these eight:

collapse_until_review possible_spam_answer_soft
plagiarism_soft gray_spam_soft_allow_distro
promotional_soft_allow_distro spam_soft_allow_distro
domain_soft_allow_distro adult_text_soft_allow_distro

For any of these, an ordinary reader sees the answer demoted or hidden with no stated reason at all. Only the author and moderators see the notice.

Two of them deserve particular attention:

A separate finding, and one step further: Quora applies data-nosnippet to its own machine-generated answers, which suppresses search-engine snippets while leaving the answer visible on the page. This is a reach-suppression mechanism invisible to both authors and readers and documented in no help article.

An honest limitation. The five *_soft_allow_distro categories are named "allow distribution," which arguably means they annotate content without reducing its reach. Both readings fit the code, and we could not settle from the code alone whether reach is reduced, unchanged, or merely flagged. Treat the reach effect of the allow_distro family as unresolved. What is established is that they are reason-suppressed — no explanation reaches readers.

There is no shadowban flag. We found no such flag in Quora's code or documentation. Two verified mechanisms fully explain the user experience that produces shadowban reports:

  1. admin_silent_restricted — a question-level distribution restriction applied with no banner and no notification.
  2. The eight silent collapse types above.

6.5 Downvotes#

Downvotes exist and reduce distribution. Quora says so in its own interface copy, verbatim:

"This answer has been downvoted and will be shown to fewer people."

Five behaviours worth knowing:

  1. Disabled for your own content. You cannot downvote your own answer.
  2. No cost to the downvoter. There is no karma or reputation gate.
  3. It is easy to believe the button was removed. It is a two-segment pill on desktop and collapses into the "…" overflow menu when space is tight. Logged-out visitors see the arrow, but clicking it routes them to sign-up instead of registering a vote. Both facts generate recurring, mistaken claims that Quora abolished downvoting. It did not; it moved the control.
  4. Counts are never shown, and the client cannot show them. Only upvotes are public. The field numDownvotes appears zero times across Quora's entire production front-end, so no reader can ever see a downvote tally.
  5. Voting is rate-limited, with the message "You have voted on too many pieces of content. Please try again later."

Quora has never published a downvote threshold for collapse. The most credible community data point is two downvotes at zero upvotes, but this is a single anecdote, not a rule. Quora's official position is that collapse depends on "a variety of signals — votes, the credibility of the voters, the credibility of the author, the quality of the writing, etc."

Do not trust the machine answer on this topic. We observed that Quora now inserts a machine-generated answer at the top of some question pages — including, ironically, the question about how many downvotes cause collapse. That machine answer gives multi-platform boilerplate with no Quora figures. It is not authoritative.

6.6 AI content: restricted in code, undefined in policy#

This is the most under-documented suppression vector on the platform.

In policy: nothing. No disclosure requirement, no prohibition, no stated penalty.

In code: three answer-level collapse types and one question-level distribution reason, verified in Quora's live production bundles:

Category Level
user_llm_content Answer
likely_llm_generated Answer
auto_content_restricted Answer
likely_llm_generated Question

These render to readers either as the generic "Answers that need improvement" heading or, for the silent set, as nothing at all.

Quora's only adjacent official statement is oblique. Its LLM opt-out article notes that AI models used for "ranking, moderation, spam detection, labeling" fall outside the user-facing training setting — which is the closest Quora comes to acknowledging that it runs AI-driven moderation and ranking.

Quora does operate detection. It began working with Pangram Labs around April 2024 and reported identifying more than one million AI-generated posts by September 2024. Quora has never stated what happens to a detected AI answer.

The practical position for anyone publishing: AI-written answers carry an unpublished, unappealable suppression risk. You cannot comply with a rule you cannot read.

6.7 Author-level factors#

Factor Status
Credentials Officially linked to reach. Quora states a good credential means "Your answers get more views." Non-conforming credentials are hidden until edited.
Topic expertise / "Knows About" Documented basis for Answer Request prioritisation and topic credentials
Followers The documented mechanism is symmetric: "content written by users you follow is more likely to appear in your feed." Your followers are your distribution.
Verification Blue checkmark for public figures
Top Writer Retired April 2021 for English. The badge still renders on historical profiles. No successor badge exists.
Account age Could not confirm as a distribution factor. No documentation and no code signal found.
Edit-block Prevents publishing and editing. Quora has never officially stated it reduces reach; reach decays through inactivity.

6.8 Where content reaches readers#

Surface How content enters
Question page You answer; order set algorithmically
Your profile Automatic
Home feed Algorithmic. Content in multiple topics you follow ranks above single-topic content
Following feed Strictly content from accounts and topics you follow. A separate route from Home
Topic pages Posts now included
Spaces Followers see Space content; posts reshareable
Quora Digest email Personalised, separate learned model from the feed. Posts now included
Google Question pages and Space subdomains only
Quora+ Paywalled answers reach subscribers only, with an "adaptive paywall" that intermittently shows paid content free

Note there is no "For You" feed. It is Home versus Following.

6.9 Space and post distribution#

Quora's official definition: "Distribution is how frequently a Space or its content is shown to people on Quora."

The documented levers:

  1. Followers are the engine. Quora states plainly: "If someone follows your Space after seeing its content, this is a strong signal that your content may be valuable to others with similar interests."
  2. Off-platform growth feeds on-platform reach. "The more followers you get coming from outside of Quora, the more your Space will be shown to people inside of Quora."
  3. Notifications must earn engagement. "If they don't interact with those notifications, your content will be shown to them less frequently."
  4. Quality degradation is penalised. "If your Space's quality or focus degrades over time, this may hurt your Space's distribution."
  5. Screen submissions. "The most recent few submissions you accept in your Space are what prospective members see first."
  6. Sort matters. Top (by votes), Recent, or Smart. Smart is the default and lets Quora decide.

Space content reaches feeds by four documented routes: you follow the Space; you follow the author; someone you follow upvoted it; or "the content is from a Space you may like" — an explicit recommendation slot that injects Space content without a follow.

7. Practical playbook#

7.1 Before you publish#

7.2 Writing an answer that can be seen#

  1. Answer the question that was asked. does_not_answer_question is collapse category #1.
  2. Be complete, not fragmentary. Quora's official statement: short fragments "won't get much distribution."
  3. Put the gist inside the answer. If a reader must leave Quora to understand it, it may be collapsed — this is written policy.
  4. If you promote, do it inside a directly helpful answer. Promotion that is not part of a helpful response is prohibited.
  5. Format properly. Use Quora's own list controls, correct capitalisation, no bold-everything, and no LaTeX for fonts, sizes or colours — Quora explicitly classes that as "very bad formatting."
  6. Quote with attribution and blockquotes. Plagiarism is deleted, and repetition escalates to a ban.
  7. Never post the same answer to multiple questions. This is named spam.
  8. Answer in the right language, and keep it current — both wrong_language and out_of_date are collapse categories.
  9. Earn upvotes and avoid downvotes. Two downvotes at zero upvotes is the best available collapse threshold estimate.
  10. Answer in the right topics — where your "Knows About" matches.

7.3 If your content gets collapsed#

  1. Look for the notice. Check the moderation notification, and the bottom of the collapsed answer for an "(Appeal)" link.
  2. Edit the answer. Quora states that "in most cases, editing answers to improve them may result in an automatic uncollapse." This is the highest-value recovery action available.
  3. If there is no visible notice, do not assume there is no problem. You may be in the silent set. Use Help → Contact Us → "I want to appeal a moderation decision."
  4. Appeal with the right ground. The modal offers "My answer does not violate the policy" and "I have edited my answer to conform to the policy." Use the second if you have edited.
  5. Be aware re-collapse is possible. There is no immunity, and the "Lock answer to prevent uncollapsing" option indicates Quora can lock a decision.
  6. Expect no timeline. Quora publishes no appeal SLA and does not guarantee human review.

7.4 Actions that escalate toward a ban#

Quora's own list, verbatim in substance:

The escalation path is: warning → edit-block → ban.

8. Glossary: Quora's actual terminology#

Term Meaning
Collapse Soft-hide. Content remains on the page, folded
Hard / soft collapse Quora's real internal distinction. Soft collapses can often be uncollapsed by editing
Edit-block Account sanction: can log in, cannot post or edit
Distribution How frequently content is shown to people
Limited distribution A restriction applied to Spaces, questions, and adult content
Needs Improvement A question state that hides it until edited
Merge Combining duplicate questions
Credential The "Knows About" attribution shown with an answer
Space A topic sub-community on its own subdomain
Collapsed answers The reader-facing list of hidden answers, with a "Why?" control
Knows About The current name for the credentials surface
Mute One-way, feed-scoped hiding of a user, topic or Space. The other party is not told
Block Mutual, interaction-scoped. Unwinds follows, notifications and endorsements; does not hide your public content
Soft delete Deleted content is replaced by a placeholder where it was embedded

Not Quora's terminology, despite wide use:

Term Reality
Purge User-coined. Appears in no Quora policy
Shadowban No such flag exists in Quora's code or documentation
Suspension Not a defined tier. Quora says "ban"
BNBR No longer a live policy document
Quora+ Partner Program Blog coinage. Not a Quora program name
Snooze Does not exist on Quora
Restrict No such social control. Only content restrictions exist

9. How to read the claims in this document#

Not all findings carry equal weight. This is the confidence key.

Officially documented — quoted directly from Quora's policy documents, help centre, Terms of Service, or robots.txt. Includes: the rule categories, the enforcement vocabulary, the appeal routes, the promotion and plagiarism rules, the quality-and-distribution statement, Space distribution levers, the block article, and the robots.txt crawler blocks.

Verified in production code — recovered from Quora's live front-end JavaScript bundles, which are publicly served without authentication. This is where the collapse taxonomy, the silent suppression set, the eight-type reason-suppression guard, admin_silent_restricted, data-nosnippet on machine answers, and the AI-content collapse categories come from. These are properties of the shipping product, not published policy, and Quora could change them silently.

Community observation — the downvote-to-collapse threshold, the reported reach effects of edit-block, essentially all comment mechanics, and the August 2026 withdrawal of question merging. Directionally useful, individually unsourced.

A documentation gap worth noting on its own: Quora publishes no help article about comments whatsoever. Comment behaviour described in §3.4 comes from production code and long-standing user accounts, not from any policy document. This is the single least-documented surface on the platform.

Unresolved, and flagged as such — the reach effect of the five *_soft_allow_distro collapse types. Whether they merely annotate or actively throttle is not determinable from the code.

Explicitly unconfirmed — we found no evidence for: a keyword blocklist; political content suppression; account age as a ranking input; a blanket shadowban flag; or any published answer-ranking weights. Claims to the contrary should be treated with scepticism.

A note on Quora's own documentation#

Two traps recur when researching this platform:

  1. Help article dates are unreliable. Nearly every article shows a 2026 metadata timestamp. The actual content dates are frequently 2021 or 2022 — the byline is the signal, not the metadata. Several articles, including the anonymity article, describe features that no longer exist.
  2. Quora's blog and product-update pages are not archived. Quora blocks the Internet Archive by policy, so announcements frequently cannot be independently verified. Where a claim in this document rests only on a press release, it is flagged.

End of document.
